The Difference

My latest book, The Difference, answers one burning question: Why is it that some people seem to move relatively easily from paycheck-to-paycheck into comfort or wealth, while others get stuck or – worse – fall back?
Not to toot my own horn, but this book couldn’t have come at a better time. These days, more than ever, you need to know how to make your own luck, how to zero in on the things you’re doing everyday – right and wrong – that have an affect on your bottom line. I’ll show you how to develop your intuition so you can recognize when to take a risk, help you increase your resilience in this bad economy, and tell you why it’s important to pinpoint your passion and make it your career (believe me, the money will follow).
All of this is based on a study I did with Merrill Lynch and Harris Interactive. We talked to more than 5,000 people from all walks of life. Three percent categorized themselves as wealthy; 27 percent said they are financially comfortable; 54 percent are living paycheck-to-paycheck and 15 percent are quickly spiraling further into debt. We dug deep to uncover the factors that made The Difference.
The good news? For the bulk of the people at the top of the financial ladder, wealth has come in the last ten years. Some had a brilliant idea that satisfied a need in the market and quickly blossomed into a multimillion dollar business (ever heard of Spanx? I talked to the founder, Sara Blakely, who started the company with $5,000). Some saved steadily over the years and are now enjoying the fruits of those labors. And others took risks that paid off in a big way.
Whether you want to be in the top three percent or the top 30 percent, you can do it.

Dear Jean,
I started to write you a few comments…I began writing these comments in “Microsoft Word” and I am now on my second page. My comments have turned into two pages of my life story from 1998. I compliment you for setting me free to express my thoughts on paper. So instead of sending you so much information about myself, I decided to keep writing in “Word” and send you this instead.
My husband and I am are PTP’s but we are working on our finances and savings.
These economic times are not new for us. Your book is helping me (since I am the one reading it) and I know it is helping others.
We have paid off two major bills since December. I have purchased Term Life Insurance for myself (my husband has term life at work). I showed my husband our monthly budget (I keep the books and he didn’t know where we stood) and we are saving for our emergency cusion.
We are PTP’s working our way to beoming FC’s.
I will send more comments later. Thank you Jeannie!
Sincerly,
Dorothy Monita
I was able to read an advance copy and I couldn’t put it down! As always, Jean’s calm and direct style is both informative and entertaining. I’m thinking about everything differently since I finished the book — especially the financial headlines and how the economy does AND DOESN’T impact me. Best of all, I’ve realized that there are things I can do to get me back on the wealth track right away. I can’t wait to buy the workbook. Congrats Jean, you’ve done it again.

I just loved reading your book, The Difference. I started investing in my early 30s due to the deck of cards I was given. I chose a career path that is very fluid. When the economy is shaky, I am often the victim of frequent “layoffs”.
My car will be paid off this year and my credit card balance will be paid off next year. Thanks to the stories of struggles and successes in your book, I have the tools to move forward and live a “debt free” life at age forty!
Thank you, Jean, for your inspiration and real life examples.
Jean,
I found your new book The Difference to be a great read. Very interesting and thought provoking. Our family is currently FC and your book brought new insight into how to move to the next level…W.
