Hi Jean-
I always appreciate your great advice. However, Wed. morning on Money 911 I heard you make a suggestion that was diificult to hear. When was the last time you asked your doctor or mechanic for a better price? Please think again about suggesting that people take advantage of tough times by trying to haggle with contractors and beat down prices. My husband and I are both self-employed, experienced craftspeople- He is a custom furniture maker/cabinet maker, I am a decorative painter. We work VERY hard. Our material costs have not gone down since the recession, nor has the amount of labor it takes to do a good job. Work is indeed scarce, and we are pricing our jobs as competitively & close to the bone as possible. We are all struggling.
We are hungry for work, but we aren't running a flea market. We are skilled in our craft,- that is why you call us. Sure, shop around, but remain respectful in your dealings. And please remember- in the long run, you only get what you pay for.
Thamks for taking the time to view this from the other side of the job.
